On 17 March 2022, the 22nd day after the escalation of the Russian military offensive in Ukraine, the body of Kharkivpride activist and volunteer Elvira (Elya) Shchemur of the feminist and LGBT+ movements was exhumed from the rubble of the Kharkiv administrative building.
We started our work in 2020. Together, we staged several Pride performances in the city. Since then, Elia was actively involved in the preparation of various works, fearlessly participating in public events.
She was sincerely devoted to our common goal and continued to fight for human rights in Ukraine.
Our last common action was “Hail Nicholas” (as opposed to St. Nicholas) at the General Consulate of the Russian Federation in Kharkiv, where we presented an anti-military message from the LGBT+ community to President Putin.
Elya joined the volunteer unit, began assisting in the invasion barely an hour and died at his headquarters as a result of the bombing of the Kharkiv city center.
We will remember Elia as energetic, motivated, positive and of course inspiring. She will remain like this in our hearts.
